Business Problem

The credit risk team, comprising 12 analysts, was manually processing a 150MB raw data text file each month to produce a credit migration matrix for senior management.

The process required extensive copying, formula manipulation, and cross-referencing in Excel—taking over 3½ hours to complete. Frequent errors, lack of audit trail, and inconsistent parameter selection undermined confidence in the results and delayed downstream reporting cycles.

Solution Delivered

We developed a hybrid Access–Excel solution to automate credit migration reporting from large flat files.

Core features included:

  • A scalable import routine that loads 150MB+ text files into an optimised MS Access database
  • A smart query layer controlled via Excel, using cell comments to drive parameterised filtering
  • A user-friendly interface allowing analysts to update parameters (e.g. rating bands, exposure types, date ranges) without writing code
  • Instant generation of the credit migration matrix directly into Excel, fully formatted for management reporting

This approach preserved Excel as the analysis layer while eliminating the manual ingestion and transformation effort.

  • Reduced monthly report generation time from 3½ hours to under 30 seconds
